The International Firefighting Competition of the CTIF was held from 10 to 15 July 1973 in Brno, Czechoslovakia. This competition was historically significant because it was the first “CTIF Games” held behind the Iron Curtain. The host country was Czechoslovakia, and the event was excellently organized despite the strict supervision of the security authorities of the regime at the time. For the first time at the international level, firefighting obstacle exercises were introduced, which until then had been mostly known in the Eastern Bloc. Teams from the host country (Czechoslovakia) were professionally prepared, while Austrian teams, which had often won previously, suffered defeat. The gold medal in Category III/A (women’s firefighting teams) was won by the team from Vyšná Šuňava. Before the official awards ceremony, the winning teams demonstrated their skills with a parallel start, which later became a regular part of firefighting competitions. The competition gathered a large number of participants, and the 7th CTIF Symposium was also held as part of the event. Teams from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) also took part in this prestigious international competition, continuing the tradition of strong results following the competition held in Karlovac in 1966.
